As the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s work continues to grow, so do our Public Policy Priorities as we work (with the help of our volunteer Field Advocates) to pass important legislation that will help save lives.
Every two years we update our Public Policy Synopsis. New for the 2021-2022 Synopsis are two separate documents—one that outlines federal priorities and another that outlines our state priorities. The issues within each category are not listed in priority order.
Additionally, the Synopsis now points out priorities that are aligned with AFSP’s Project 2025 and includes new federal and state priorities for AFSP to work on. New priorities include:
- Peer support programs
- Firearm safety and education programs/resources
- Inclusion of diverse populations in mental health legislation
- Adverse Childhood Experiences and suicide risk
- Mental health training and resources for first responders
- Tele-health services and access
Take Action
Get Involved in Advocacy with AFSP! Join thousands of volunteer Field Advocates across the country connecting with public officials and urging their support of suicide prevention and mental health. Throughout the year AFSP Field Advocates are called upon over email to contact their legislators at the federal and state levels in as little as 2 ½ minutes via the AFSP Action Center. Advocates can get further involved by connecting with their local chapter and meeting with public officials locally via phone or in district offices and as part of State Capitol Day events. Field Advocates will also receive future information about the 2021 AFSP Advocacy Forum to be held virtually this year!
