NEW YORK (August 9, 2023) –  The American Foundation of Suicide Prevention (AFSP), the nation’s leading suicide prevention organization earned a four-star rating for its strong financial health and commitment to accountability and transparency from Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent charity evaluator. This is Charity Navigator’s top rating and the highest possible score of “exceptional” – a ranking only given to charities that “exceed industry standards and outperform most charities in its cause.”

“AFSP’s commitment to sound financial management is core to our work to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide,” said AFSP CEO Robert Gebbia. “We are proud of our four-star rating and that our donors can trust that their donations are being spent wisely to advance suicide prevention.”

Since 2002, using objective analysis, Charity Navigator has awarded only the most fiscally responsible organizations a four-star rating. In 2011, Charity Navigator added 17 metrics, focused on governance and ethical practices as well as measures of openness, to its ratings methodology. These Accountability & Transparency metrics, which account for 50 percent of a charity’s overall rating, reveal which charities operate in accordance with industry best practices and whether they are open with their donors and stakeholders. On June 1, 2016, Charity Navigator also upgraded its methodology for rating each charity’s financial health further substantiating the vigor of determining and receiving a four-star rating.

“We are delighted to provide AFSP with third-party accreditation that validates their operational excellence,” said Michael Thatcher, President and CEO of Charity Navigator. “The Four-Star Rating is the highest possible rating an organization can achieve. We are eager to see the good work that AFSP is able to accomplish in the years ahead.”
