We're less than one month away from International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day, which takes place each year on the Saturday before American Thanksgiving. Also known as Survivor Day, this annual occasion is an opportunity for those who have been affected by the tragedy of suicide to come together and find support, comfort, and healing through shared experience. This year, those who have lost someone to suicide will gather at Survivor Day events around the globe on Saturday, November 23, 2024.

In addition to Survivor Day, Día de Esperanza (Day of Hope) takes place just one day before on Friday, November 22, and offers support specifically for Hispanic and Latinx communities that have been affected by suicide loss.

Both Survivor Day and Día de Esperanza will feature virtual events that anyone can join. We encourage you to learn more about each event and tune in at the links below.

Día de Esperanza (Day of Hope)

Día de Esperanza (Day of Hope) takes place this year on Friday, November 22, one day before Survivor Day, and offers support specifically for Hispanic and Latinx communities that have been affected by suicide loss.

This virtual event will be moderated by AFSP Vice President of Public Relations María de los Ángeles Corral, and will feature a panel discussion with Central Texas Chapter volunteer Laura Ramos and Nevada Chapter board member Martin Reyes. Both Laura and Martin are survivors of suicide loss, and they each have a powerful perspective on mental health and suicide prevention in Hispanic and Latinx culture.

The conversation, taking place in Spanish with Spanish closed captions, will consider how Hispanic and Latinx communities face specific challenges when it comes to addressing mental health, such as cultural stigma surrounding suicide. Importantly, the conversation will also consider strategies for overcoming those challenges by encouraging open and honest dialogue about mental health struggles, suicide, grief, and how to support survivors of suicide loss.

Día de Esperanza is a unique opportunity for those in Hispanic in Latinx communities who have been affected by suicide loss to find connection, understanding, and hope through shared cultural experience. We hope you'll join us.

Tune in at 4 p.m. ET on Friday, November 22, at facebook.com/afspnational or youtube.com/afspnational.

International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day (Survivor Day)

International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day, also known as Survivor Day, takes place this year on Saturday, November 23. This annual occasion is an opportunity for those who have been affected by suicide loss to gather at events around the globe and find connection, understanding, and hope through shared experience.

In addition to in-person events, AFSP hosts Survivor Day Live, a virtual experience bringing communities together from across the world through Facebook and YouTube Live. This year's virtual event will be moderated by Paul Augustyniak, a Tennessee Chapter board chair and Loss & Healing Council member. Paul will facilitate a panel discussion among three survivors of suicide loss, including Nebraska Chapter volunteer Donna Wolff, Tampa Bay Chapter volunteer Teresa Daniels, and Central Texas Chapter volunteer Jimmie Martin.

The conversation will explore each panelist's experiences, how they have navigated the loss of their loved ones, and what set them on a pathway toward healing. Attendees can also expect to learn what each panelist has discovered throughout the healing process, and what they would tell someone just beginning their own journey of processing a suicide loss.

You can find an in-person Survivor Day event near you at afsp.org/survivorday. You can also join us at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday, November 23, for our Survivor Day Live virtual event. Tune into the online event at facebook.com/afspnational or youtube.com/afspnational.
