Tax-Smart Giving Through Your IRA
An IRA charitable rollover, also known as a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), allows individuals age 70½ or older to donate directly from their IRA tax-free to a qualified nonprofit.
Key Benefits
- Lower taxable income: QCDs are not included as gross income, preventing a donation from moving a donor into a higher tax bracket.
- Satisfy RMDS: For individuals who are 73+ with a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD), an IRA gift can satisfy all or part of that requirement without increasing taxable income.
- No Itemizing Required: Standard deductions work, meaning there is no need to itemize deductions in order to receive the benefit.
- Manage Medicare Premiums: Reducing taxable income may help avoid higher Medicare premium thresholds.
Bottom Line
- QCDS are a win-win. They allow donors to support suicide prevention directly while avoiding additional tax implications, which benefits both the donor and the mission.
Key Considerations
- Age Requirement: You must be at least 70½ years old at the time of the distribution.
- Contribution Limit: In 2026, the limit is $111,000 per individual ($220,000 for married couples who both qualify).
- Eligible Charities: Funds must go directly to a qualified 501(c)(3) organization. Donor Advised Funds (DAFs) and private charities do not qualify.
- Timing: To count for the current tax year, funds must be distributed by the IRA no later than December 31. The "first-dollar-out" rule applies, meaning QCDs count toward RMDs before any other withdrawals.
Your IRA gift helps advance research, education, advocacy, and support programs that save lives.
How to Initiate an IRA Gift
- Contact your IRA custodian and request a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD).
- Instruct the custodian to make the check payable to: American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
- Ensure the distribution is sent directly from your IRA to AFSP (not to you personally).
- Notify AFSP of your gift so we can properly acknowledge and credit it.
