International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day

On Saturday, November 21, join thousands of suicide loss survivors at events across the world. International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day, also known as Survivor Day, encourages friends and family of those who have died by suicide to come together for healing and support. These special events allow loss survivors to connect with a community of people who understand their unique loss, and to find hope through shared experience. Join us.

How It Started

In 1999, Senator Harry Reid, who lost his father to suicide, introduced a resolution to the United States Senate, leading to the creation of International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day. Also known as Survivor Day, it was designated by the United States Congress as a day on which those impacted by suicide loss could come together for healing and support. Each year, Survivor Day falls on the Saturday before American Thanksgiving, to offer warmth and connection during a time of year that is often difficult for suicide loss survivors.

About the Events

In addition to sponsoring hundreds of in-person events across the globe for International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day, AFSP also hosts two virtual events for survivors of suicide loss: Día de Esperanza and Survivor Day Live.

International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day (In Person)

While Survivor Day activities vary based on location, most include watching an AFSP-produced film followed by group discussions that encourage people to share their experiences, talk about their loved ones, or simply listen to others who understand the unique pain of suicide loss. Part of what makes Survivor Day events special is that they’re flexible and can be adapted to your needs. Throughout the event, you decide how much or how little you participate and share, and which activities you do or do not want to join. At any point, and as often as you like, you can step out and take a break –– or you can stay for the whole event. It’s entirely up to you, your comfort level, and what you find most helpful. Find an event near you.

Día de Esperanza (Virtual)

Día de Esperanza takes place the Friday before International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day. This event includes a Spanish-language panel discussion about perspectives on mental health and suicide loss in Hispanic and Latinx culture.
